I toured for three years on an '87 Savage. Trips ranged from 400-500 mile weekend jaunts to 5000 mile vacations. I also did some long trips with a passenger and all our camping gear. No problems with the Savage. Traded it in with 30,000+ miles and it was in great shape. The only work I had done in three years was replacement of the head gasket once.
Don't worry about excessive wear from touring. Just keep an eye on the oil level and if you're running the engine hot, change the oil more often.
